AMC Networks, Time Warner Cable Reach Temporary Extension, Continue Carriage Talks

AMC Networks and Time Warner Cable are continuing to negotiate a long-term carriage deal renewal for the IFC and WE tv cable channels, but have agreed on a temporary extension to avoid a year-end blackout of the networks.

Spokeswomen for AMC Networks and Time Warner Cable on Monday confirmed the extension, but didn't detail how long it would keep the channels on the air. They also didn't comment on the state of negotiations about a new longer-term carriage deal.

TW Cable's right to carry IFC, home to such shows as Fred Armisen's Portlandia and The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, and WE tv, which airs Braxton Family Values, was scheduled to expire at the start of 2013.

The flagship AMC network, home of Mad Men and The Walking Dead, is not part of the discussions since TW Cable has a separate carriage deal for it.

The news of the extension and continued talks came as Viacom and Cablevision Systems faced a year-end deadline to renew their current carriage agreement for Viacom's suite of channels, including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV.

Led by CEO Glenn Britt, TW Cable has taken a tougher stance against cable networks group. At a recent investor conference, he said the cable operator could drop underperforming networks or push them to different tiers.

AMC Networks, led by CEO Josh Sapan, recently struck new carriage deals with Verizon's FiOS TV, AT&T's U-Verse and satellite TV firm Dish Network.

Psy on Pressure, the Universal Language of Michael Jackson and Ushering in 2013 'Gangnam Style' (Q&A)

How will South Korean sensation Psy usher in 2013? By partying with the huddled masses in New York’s Times Square, where he’ll appear as a featured act on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

And there’s certainly lots to celebrate: a billion YouTube views for his hit “Gangnam Style,” a world record he set just over a week earlier, a recording contract with Scooter Braun’s Schoolboy Records, his 35th birthday on Jan. 1 and a brief breather from nonstop action as he crisscrossed the country -- and the globe -- bringing K-Pop to radio stations, concert stages and living rooms via appearances on Ellen DeGeneres, Today, SNL and The Tonight Show, among others. Finally, Psy, who’s married and a father to twins, tells The Hollywood Reporter, “I really can celebrate myself and my last four or five months.”

And no doubt he’ll do it in style. Read on for more insight into the international pop phenom who THR named one of its 2012 rule-breakers.

The Hollywood Reporter: With all of the appearances that you make, are you on a plane every single day?

Psy: I think so. At least for the last couple months. I'm away from my home a very long time. And it seems I cannot go back there until next March or April. … But the thing is, I'm a singer and entertainer. On the stage, I get filled up with the applause.

THR: We’ve given this a lot of thought: what is it about “Gangnam Style” that people most gravitate to -- is it the song, the video or the dance?

Psy: I've thought about it, too, so that I can repeat it on the next single. [Laughs] In analyzing that, it's really hard to tell. You can say it was all about the video, right? But I'm thinking, people are already done with the video. They’ve already seen it, and even if they repeat watching my video, they can do it at most, like, twenty times. Then you get tired of it, right? So it has to be the dance. … [Because] they make it their own. They can improvise in different circumstances.

PHOTOS: 2012's Biggest Rule Breakers: 'Walking Dead,' Psy, Quentin Tarantino and 7 Others Who Rocked the Status Quo

THR: When “Gangnam Style” reached No. 1 on the Hot 100, what was it like to see your name at the top of a Billboard chart?

Psy: So me and Scooter [Braun], our job the last couple months was to get people to know the name Psy. Because when I first came to the United States market, they described me as “the You Tube guy,” then they would say, “the horse dance guy,” then the “Gangnam Style” guy and now, just Psy.

THR: Even with that recognition, though, these days, fame no longer lasts fifteen minutes now, it's fifteen seconds…

Psy: And this is like the heaviest pressure I’ve ever had in the last twelve years of my career. But what's great is, I'm not a rookie at all. I've had some huge success in Korea so it felt kind of similar to me.

"When I first came to the United States market, they described me as 'the You Tube guy,' then they would say, 'the horse dance guy,' then the 'Gangnam Style' guy and now, it's just Psy."

THR: When you reach such extraordinary highs -- like logging a billion views on YouTube -- inevitably, you hit some lows, like the controversy concerning anti-war statements you made a decade ago. Because you're so connected to the news cycle, are you on a constant emotional rollercoaster?

Psy: Yes. When good things are happening, I think maybe some bad thing is gonna come and I should prepare. But I thank my parents because they've borne a kid who is, like, too positive. I'm that kind of person -- I basically think, there's two kinds of concerns in the world: one is if I worry, and then it changes, and the other where it doesn't matter if I worry or not [because] there’s nothing I can do to change it. For example, if I worried about tomorrow's weather, would it matter? So after 12 years, I can classify the concerns.

PHOTOS: MTV European Music Awards: Taylor Swift Wins Big, Psy Performs, and Other Moments

THR: You attended Christmas at the White House, what was it like to meet President Obama?

Psy:  He was like a really cool brother. Really. I was so impressed. I was really nervous and stunned before meeting him, but he has such a great talent to make people feel taken care of.

THR:  What do you think is America's greatest export?

Psy: First of all, the English language. And also pop music. A song like Michael Jackson “Billie Jean,” it's like the world's biggest, most universal language.

THR:  Are you getting asked to do a lot of cameos and appear on other peoples’ songs?

Psy: I'm asked a lot and I'm also asking a lot. Me and Scooter are working really aggressively these days for my new album.

THR: You signed with Scooter Braun not long after your first meeting. What was it about him that impressed you?

Psy: When he told me about his adopted brothers [from Africa] and how being Jewish he’s like all the immigrants, all the underdogs. That's the reason why he didn’t want the lyrics to “Gangnam Style” to be translated [to English]. That was the first comment that he made to me. And I was really touched. I was, like, “Where the hell did this guy come from?” He’s made such a huge difference for my vision. … And he has the highest alcohol tolerance of any American. We had a drinking contest and he literally beat the shit out of me. And I have a very high tolerance [Laughs]

THR: If you had to describe 2012 in five words, what would they be?

Psy: "Becoming a rookie once again."

Jack Klugman's Widow Turns Planned Holiday Party Into Memorial

Jack Klugman Script Reading - P 2012

Surrounded by friends and family, Peggy Klugman -- the widow of late actor Jack Klugman (who died Dec. 24 at age 90 most likely of natural causes) -- held an informal celebration of his life at the couple's house in Woodlands Hills, Calif, on Saturday, Dec. 29. One guest, entertainment journalist Jeanne Wolf (jeannewolfshollywood.com) talks about how his friends remembered him last night and her longtime friendship with the actor:

Jack Klugman was at his memorial party held this Saturday night, just not the guest anyone expected. His presence was felt by all. The Klugman’s annual holiday party, "Mingle and Jingle," at their spacious Woodland Hills home had been planned for some time. When Jack unexpectedly died a few days before the event, his wife Peggy made the right decision, "We're going to celebrate Jack! So the party is still on."

PHOTOS: Hollywood’s Notable Deaths of 2012

In a room full of large posters of Klugman's films and some amusing mementos, Peggy showed friends that an urn with Jack's ashes had arrived in the middle of the day. "He decided to show up after all," she smiled. "He came early." One pal piped up, "Hey, at least some of those ashes belong at the race track." You know that Klugman would have delivered that line perfectly. You also know that he would have laughed.

Loved ones were gathered and there were tears, of course, but even more stories and laughter as tapes of Klugman's TV shows played around the house. Guests enjoyed Jack's favorite chili and favorite candies. There were many toasts and memories.

Jack starred on stage and TV for the world. For me, personally, he was a star in my life. We first met when he came to Burt Reynold's theater in Florida to act in one of his pal's plays.

I can't count the times we had dinner, or I went to see him perform. In the mid-eighties when throat cancer began to really affect him, the tabloids blasted rumors that he was dying. Entertainment Tonight called him and he insisted, "I'll only tell this story to Jeanne Wolf." What a responsibility! As he sought medical help to improve his voice, I wrote for TV Guide about his battle to regain his speech.

STORY: 'Odd Couple,' 'Quincy' Star Jack Klugman Dies at 90

I’ll never forget Jack telling me, "I wasn't afraid that I’d die. I was just terrified that I wouldn't be able to act again."

No wonder I always thought of him as the grouchy optimist. One of the highlights of our friendship was attending his wedding to Peggy in 2008. He was eighty five years old and just beaming. Friends like Garry Marshall and John Stamos came to tease him and to toast him.

He went back to TV and to the stage with his great friend Tony Randall. Troubles with his voice continued but the audiences applauded so he kept doing his comic thing.

At one point in vocal therapy he told me, "Now I have the voice of a sixteen year old. I’m looking for a doctor who could give me the body of a sixteen year old."

Broadway dimmed its lights in a tribute to Klugman. I'm sad he's gone but seeing just a few minutes of him on screen and I was laughing out loud again. And his memory lingers in his house blazing with holiday lights which weren't dimmed but maybe burned a little brighter this weekend.

Adam Sandler, Judd Apatow Spill Secrets From Roommate Days (Video)

Judd Apatow Adam Sandler 60 Minutes - H 2012

Before their films were making millions at the box office, Adam Sandler and Judd Apatow were roommates sharing a $900 per month apartment in the Valley. The old friends sat down with Anderson Cooper and CBS’ 60 Minutes Overtime to share memories from their early forays into comedy and why Sandler eventually moved out.

“Back then, life was just doing stand-up or writing jokes. You would sleep until noon every day and kind of stumble out,” Apatow said. “You would have to be at work at 8:30 at night. Work was sometimes 15 minutes.”

Sandler slept on a mattress with no sheets – and occasionally shared it with one of their friends.

THR COVER: The Angsty Existence of Judd Apatow

“Adam always had a rental car. He never bought a car for literally 12 years,” Apatow said. As Apatow recalls it, Sandler’s cars would be filled to the brim with trash and McDonalds bags.

But Sandler said they didn’t consider themselves broke.

“It wasn’t broke. We were doing as comedians good enough to get by,” Sandler said. “We could eat at Red Lobster once every month. That was a big night out.”

“That was like, ‘We’re fancy now,’” Apatow added.

But living together wasn't without its drama. They got into tiffs over who was better looking, (Sandler, to Apatow’s dismay, had a reputation for being more handsome) and there were issues with Apatow using Sandler's bathroom.

PHOTOS: Six Degrees of Judd Apatow

When Sandler moved to New York to join Saturday Night Live, he continued to pay rent, because he thought he was going to “get fired” every week and might have to move back to Los Angeles.

“He just left, like he was going to come back, but he just didn’t come back,” Apatow said.

Apatow’s latest film, This is 40 is currently in theaters. Sandler’s Grown Ups 2 is scheduled for a summer 2013 release.

'Meet the Press': President Obama Addresses 'Lincoln Moment' (Video)

Barack Obama Meet The Press 2008 - H 2012

Addressing the fiscal cliff on Sunday's episode of Meet the Press, President Obama raised the subject of Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, a film that's drawn buzz in Washington for its depiction of Abraham Lincoln deftly overcoming political pushback in order to pass the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery.

"I think it's also important for Americans to remember that politics has always been messy. People have been asking me a lot about the film Lincoln... " said Obama, prompting Meet the Press host David Gregory to ask: "Is this your Lincoln moment?"

"Look, A) I never compared myself to Lincoln and B) obviously the magnitude of the issues are quite different from the Civil War and slavery," responded Obama. "The point, though is, is democracy's always been messy, and we're a big, diverse country that is constantly sort of arguing about all kinds of stuff. But eventually, we do the right thing."

STORY: 'Meet the Press' Books Obama as Fiscal Cliff Vote Nears

Sunday's appearance marked Obama's 11th on the show, though only his second since taking office in 2009. That fall he appeared on Meet the Press as the Senate approached its vote on his health care bill -- which ultimately passed.

In his sitdown with Gregory, which took place Saturday in the White House, Obama said he expected a decision to be made on how to handle the fiscal cliff within the next 48 hours.

If Republicans succeed in blocking, he added, "We'll come back with a new Congress on January 4th and the first bill that will be introduced on the floor will be to cut taxes on middle class families and I don't think the average person is gonna say, 'Gosh, that's a really partisan agenda on the part of either the president or Democrats in Congress.' I think people will say, 'That makes sense.'"

'American Idol': Hollie Cavanagh Reveals Album Plans for New Year

Hollie Cavanagh American Idol Performance - P 2012

Fans of American Idol season 11 alum Hollie Cavanagh may have a new album to look forward to in 2013.

Cavanagh returned to her hometown, Liverpool, England, for the holidays and sat down for an interview with the Liverpool Echo, where she revealed her plans to move to Los Angeles and record an album. She is also on the hunt for a label, she said.

PHOTOS: ‘American Idol' Live: The 2012 Tour In Pictures

Cavanagh said she enlisted the help of Nathan Porter, who worked on American Idol during her season, and inquired about songwriters that she could work with for her record.

“It’s all about finding the right song,” she said.  “I’m working on writing my own songs and I’m trying to put my own stamp on it.”

She also said she has high hopes that a move to Los Angeles will provide a more productive creative environment than her current home in McKinney, Texas, where she has lived for the past 10 years.

"There’s not a lot to do where I am.” she says, “But in LA there are labels and writers I can work with so I’m excited about moving.”

Holliepops will be thrilled to know that Cavanagh is planning a pop album, but also wants to try ballads in the vein of current Idol judge Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and the departed Whitney Houston.

"Those ballads don’t sell as much as they did when they made them so I want to do pop songs," she said. "But there will still be ballads on there as well.”

Cavanagh additionally spoke of acting aspirations, revealing that she took acting classes and auditioned for Disney.

The 19-year-old fourth place finisher said she looked back on her Idol season fondly.

"The thing with Idol is you get your 15 minutes of fame," she said of the tour, which was "fun."

"For a lot of artists it takes them a while to get there but we were put on stage in sold-out arenas," she said.  "After the show and the tour  [the] real hard work kicks in."

Jean Harris, 'Scarsdale Diet' Killer and Cultural Flashpoint, Dies at 89

Jean Harris, whose 1981 trial for murdering her famed cardiologist boyfriend captivated the nation and inspired several telefilms, died on Sunday at the age of 89.

Harris' legal saga lasted an entire year, from March 1980 to 1981. A headmistress at a private school in Virgina, she was the long-time girlfriend of Dr. Herman Tarnower, a well-known physician who popularized the "Scarsdale Diet," and was charged with killing him after an altercation over one of his long-term lovers, of which he allegedly had many.

PHOTOS: Hollywood's Notable Deaths of 2012

The trial, during which Harris claimed she accidentally shot Tarnower as they wrestled over a gun, captivated the nation. She became a symbol for repressed women, and after she was convicted, she worked to better the conditions of women in prison, an effort that included creating a daycare to children born to imprisoned mothers. She also helped imprisoned women work toward college educations and GEDs. Sentenced to 15 years to life in 1981, she was granted clemency by New York Governor Mario Cuomo in 1993.

Hollywood grabbed on to the national event; the telefilm The People vs. Jean Harris, a two-part, four hour film, premiered in 1981, and earned star Ellen Burstyn both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her turn in the title role.

Bustyn also appeared in a brief cameo in a 2005 HBO film about Harris and Tarnower's relationship, called Mrs. Harris, and earned another Emmy nod for her role as one of Tarnower's past lovers. Annette Bening, who played Harris in that film, earned both Emmy and Golden Globe nods, as did Ben Kingsley, who played Tarnower.

Comedian Katt Williams Arrested For Child Endangerment

Katt Williams - P 2012

Comedian Katt Williams was arrested Friday for allegedly endangering his children.

Police say multiple weapons were found at the home of the 41-year-old entertainer, whose birth name is Micah Sierra Williams. He was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and possession of a stolen firearm, the Los Angeles Times reported.

STORY: Hollywood's 10 Most Gripping Legal Dramas of 2012

Williams was released on $100,000 bail Friday, and later asked TMZ  rhetorically "How do you keep kids safe without guns?"

The arrest came after the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services completed a welfare check of his home and discovered the weapons, one of which police say had been reported stolen. The agency did not specify how many children were living there or whether they had been removed, though TMZ reports indicate four of his children were placed in protective custody Friday.

The incident was the latest in a series of recent legal troubles for the comedian. Earlier this month, Williams was arrested in northern California on a previous warrant related to reckless driving and evading officers. In November, a former personal assistant sued him for more than $5 million for allegedly striking her.

PHOTOS: Top 10 Legal Disclaimers in Hollywood

In October, he and Live Nation were hit with a lawsuit claiming a show he performed in Oakland lasted just ten minutes and devolved into the comedian stripping off his clothes and attempting to fight with audience members.

Williams regularly appears on BET on shows including Comic View, Rip the Runway and The BET Awards. He will appear in Scary Movie 5 next year.

A request for comment from Williams' rep has not been answered.

MTV Rings in the New Year With 'Club NYE' Hosted by Snooki and JWOWW

Snooki & JWOW PR Image - H 2012

Can't make it to the club for New Year's? MTV is bringing the nightlife experience to TVs across the country with MTV's Club NYE 2013, airing live from Times Square on Dec. 31 at 11 p.m.

And what is New Year's at the club without a few pop-du-jour performances and a notable name to host festivities? Cue Jersey Shore and Snooki & JWOWW stars Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWOWW" Farley, who will serve as the masters of ceremonies for the MTV broadcast this year.

PHOTOS: Celebrity Caterer Lulu Powers' New Year's Essentials

"I have stage fright!" Farley tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I've never hosted a live broadcast like this before, hopefully I don't freeze or go blank on stage." But, she adds, "I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate."

As for the performances, MTV has enlisted the help of Ne-Yo, Rita Ora, Conor Maynard, Sean Kingston and Ke$ha. The Knocks will serve as house DJ during the broadcast.

PHOTOS: 15 Best TV Comedies of 2012

While Ke$ha's latest hit single "Die Young" had been heating up the airwaves over the last few months, the song is not likely to be heard during her set. In the wake of the Sandy Hook elementary school shootings earlier this month, the song suffered a steep drop in radio play. But she is more than likely to play her latest single "Come On," which she recently perfomed on The X Factor, and an old favorite or two.

In the spirit of keeping-it-in-the-MTV-family, Polizzi and Farley will be promoting the second season of their Shore spinoff (debuting Jan. 8) and will share hosting duties with fellow network personality Jeff Dye, who will simultaneously be his reality competition series Money From Strangers.

Piers Morgan Jokes About Petition to Have Him Deported

Piers Morgan

CNN’s Piers Morgan continues to mock a petition seeking his deportation from the United States.

PHOTOS: 20 Biggest Political Players in Hollywood

The petition supported by gun rights advocates charges Morgan with waging war on the Second Amendment and has attracted more than 91,000 signatures. But that doesn’t seem to worry its target. Writing from vacation in the U.K., Morgan tweeted:

Morgan has been speaking out in favor of gun control in the wake of the Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. His on-air clash with gun advocates and calls for stricter gun laws presumably helped inspire the petition.

STORY: Piers Morgan, Bill O'Reilly, Joe Scarborough Take on Gun Control After Newtown

“British Citizen and CNN television host Piers Morgan is engaged in a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment,” reads the petition. “We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens.”

Morgan has sparred with critics about the issue on Twitter.

The mounting Twitter criticism of Morgan has been met with support other corners. Outspoken documentarian Michael Moore tweeted:

The petition calling for Morgan’s deportation was posted on the White House’s We the People website, which allows users to start a petition and receive an official response if it attracts 25,000 signatures within 30 days. The Morgan deportation petition has more than enough signatures, but its organizers could find themselves waiting a while for a response.

STORY: Hollywood's 10 Most Gripping Legal Dramas of 2012

The White House has responded to 87 petitions so far, but among those with the required signatures still awaiting a response includes one created in September 2011 concerning labeling genetically modified foods. A White House spokesperson told Politico earlier this week it seeks to respond in a “timely manner” to We the People  petitions, but acknowledged there may be delays, “depending on the topic and the overall volume of petitions.”

Other petitions still awaiting responses include on seeking the White House to build a Death Star (yes, of Star Wars fame) by 2016. Another petition, which has not reached the required number of signatures, asks the Obama administration to keep Morgan in the country -- though for a not particularly nice reason:

"We want to keep Piers Morgan in the USA. There are two very good reasons for this. Firstly, the first amendment. Second and the more important point. No one in the UK wants him back. Actually there is a third. It will be hilarious to see how loads of angry Americans react."

Geeks of All Sorts Pay Tribute to 'Thunderbirds' Creator Gerry Anderson

Gerry Anderson Thunderbirds Creator - P 2012

Gerry Anderson, known for creating the British puppet adventure TV show Thunderbirds, died Wednesday. He was 83.

Anderson’s son Jamie made the announcement on his personal blog, where he wrote the TV creator “died peacefully in his sleep at midday.” Anderson had battled dementia the previous two years, a condition that had worsened during the past six months.

His crowning achievement, Thunderbirds originally aired in the U.K. for two seasons from 1965-66 and was produced by Anderson’s AP Films. It centered on a family of adventurers, the Tracys, as they respond to disasters via their International Rescue service.

“Thunderbirds are go!" were among the show’s catchphrases. Jamie Anderson thanked his father’s fans for their support and the “happy childhood memories” they shared of his father’s work.

“I know Dad would have been blown away by the support, positivity, and kind words,” the younger Anderson wrote. “I think the saddest thing would have been if he had passed without being noticed, but the response has been the total opposite.”

After finding work in the film industry scarce, Anderson received his break in 1957 when he was asked to create the puppet show The Adventures of Twizzle. He also co-created, wrote for and executive produced the mid-'70s series Space: 1999. Other credits include Stingray and Joe 90.

A number of notables paid tribute to the TV creator and his unique style of “supermarionation,” many noting the effect his work had on their childhoods.

'X Factor' Finale Makes No Mention of Melanie Amaro? Says Simon Cowell: 'It Wasn't Deliberate'

Simon Cowell Melanie Amaro press conference P

“Whoever it is, it’s going to be a life-changing moment,” said Mario Lopez, flanked by finalists Tate Stevens and Carly Rose Sonenclar in the final moments of the X Factor’s season two closer. Yet we couldn’t help but wonder: if this moment were so course-altering, how come there wasn’t one reference to last year’s winner, Melanie Amaro? After all, she too was promised stardom and success, not to mention support.

So was there one utterance of Melanie Amaro’s name? We asked creator and head judge Simon Cowell, who said with a smirk like he’d just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar, “You know the answer to that … and well-pointed out two hours later.” He then defended the singer, who was a second-chance addition (a la this season's Diamond White) and his own mentee, adding that the snub “wasn't deliberate.”

PHOTOS: 'X Factor' Season 2: Meet the Contestants

No doubt he had plenty on his mind, what with that red carpet-Christmas extravaganza to navigate, his boys One Direction in town and the still lingering aftertaste of curious performances from the previous night (we're looking at you, Leann Rimes). Still, it doesn’t exactly bode well for the show whose most basic promise is a music career, when its inaugural victor is nowhere to be found.

To be fair, Amaro did appear on the show a few weeks ago and it’s not like her fellow season one finalists, some of whom live within miles of the X Factor studio, made token appearances in the audience on finale night, either, and several of them also scored Sony Music record deals. Indeed, judge and Epic Records chairman L.A. Reid, whose roster includes season one's Amaro, Chris Rene, Marcus Canty and rapper Astro, told reporters after the show that he anticipates three or four of season two’s lot will also be offered recording contracts (despite the existence of official Syco-branded websites, neither Sonenclar or Fifth Harmony have been signed yet, according to Cowell).

STORY: 'X Factor's' Simon Cowell on Fifth Harmony: 'They Remind Me of One Direction'

Cowell confirmed that winner Tate Stevens is already committed to Sony Nashville and that, as of Jan. 2, he will be working on songs with hit writer John Shanks (Miley Cyrus, Michelle Branch). Unlike Amaro’s as-yet-to-be-released first album, Cowell promised that Stevens’ debut will “happen much, much quicker.”

Both better get hustling, because today’s X Factor champion can be yesterday’s news in a hot TV minute.

What do you think of the show's Melanie Amaro snub? Let us know in the comments.

'American Idol' Satire 'Elimination Night' Previewed in Web Teaser (Video)

Idol book Elimination night P

The salacious dealings inside the studios of the fictional reality TV competition Project Icon will hit stores next month with the release of Elimination Night, a thinly-veiled, scathing tell-all of the tenth season of a top-ranked talent show -- yes, that would be American Idol.

The book publishers have now issued a juicy online trailer teasing that the tome -- which has fictional judges obviously based on Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler -- will be "deliciously outrageous."

"I never thought I would have found myself in showbiz, but there I was helping produce Project Icon," intones the voice of the book’s author, "Anonymous," who talks from the shadows about "dealing with these people on a daily basis."

STORY: New Book Satires 'American Idol'

The "people" -- made of clay in the promo -- includes Lopez doppelganger "Bibi Vasquez" and her "not-so-sincere melodrama," Tyler dead-ringer "Joey Lovecraft" and his "extracurricular activities" and Ryan Seacrest-esque host "Wayne Shoreline" as an "android" with "passive-aggressive smugness."

"The problem was, our audience didn’t find it quite as entertaining," says the secret author. "My job was to keep the whole thing from getting canceled … easier said than done."

Billed as a "satire in the vein of The Devil Wears Prada," Elimination Night is a 281-page work of fiction telling the story of a young woman who's privy to the behind-the-scenes insanity of a hit series. The only clue revealing the true identity of "Anonymous" is he or she had actual, real-life dealings behind the scenes in the reality show world.

The book is scheduled for release on Jan. 8.  Pre-orders are being taken at Amazon.Com/Elimination Night.

Arsenio Hall Show Returns - H 2012

Arsenio Hall is headed back to late-night TV next fall with The Arsenio Hall Show and the first promo for his new effort has hit the web.

It's not the usual trailer. Instead, the minute-long trailer pays homage to the horror genre, kicking off like a movie preview with helicopters, cops running and a "legendary" figure in shade.

When the woman opens a door in a dark alley, she's met with Hall and his group of fist-pumping followers. "I'm not the Wolfman, I'm the Woof ... Man!" he declares.

The Arsenio Hall Show will be produced CBS TV Distribution in association with Arsenio Hall Communications and Octagon Entertainment Productions. Hall will executive produce with manager John Ferriter.

The late-night show, sold to 95 percent of the country, will debut Sept. 9, 2013. Hall's previous Arsenio Hall Show incarnation aired from 1989-94.

Mondo Guerra Recaps 'Project Runway All Stars': Flapper or Flopper?

Mondo Print on Print Portrait - P 2012

[Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen Thursday's episode.]

The all-stars revisit a decade of glamour and decadence when they’re asked to create modern looks inspired by the Roaring Twenties. And just to keep things interesting, the designers are pitted against each other in a fashion face-off.

With only six all-stars left, there’s no more middle of the pack -- you’re either in the top or in the bottom. It will take everything these designers have to make it to the finish line.

PHOTOS: 'Project Runway: All Stars' Season 2 Cast: Meet the Designers (Again)

In the Workroom

It’s Uli vs. Laura Kathleen in the category of evening social soiree. Fine-feathered (and fringed) Uli is in her element again this week. Her knack with trims and embellishment continue to impress the judges. Laura Kathleen thinks Uli is more of a stylist than a designer. But Laura Kathleen has a secret weapon of her own -- fur.

Joshua squares off against Emilio in the category of afternoon garden party. Emilio decides to modernize a vintage silhouette via print, but Joanna thinks it looks like granny’s sofa. Meanwhile, Joshua is hoping his fresh approach to a draped, dropped-waist dress will stand out.

Ivy takes on Anthony Ryan in the category of after-hours speakeasy. Anthony Ryan gets the feeling that Ivy is watching his every move. Joanna is crazy about Anthony Ryan’s feathered capelet, but Ivy isn’t impressed by what she sees. When Joanna asks her to rate his design, Ivy gives him a five out of 10.

On the Runway

Guest judges actress Gretchen Mol and designer Jenny Packham join the all stars speakeasy this week. Then it’s show time!

Here’s what I thought of the looks on the runway:

Joshua: Love the colors and spirit of this dress. It’s a very wearable piece and had great movement on the runway. Where Joshua fell short this week was in the styling. He HAD to put that darn broach on!

Emilio: It’s a fine dress with some special details, but it didn’t look very '20s to me. This design in general just wasn’t very memorable. Emilio is an extremely talented designer -- I wish he would have dug deeper into his costume background and give us more wow moments.

Uli: This fringed frock had Uli’s signature all over it. The combination of textures was interesting and exciting. My problem is that it reminds me of her looks from past challenges. ANOTHER white dress?? Can she surprise us with something unexpected?

Laura Kathleen: Another soft, feminine look from Laura Kathleen. But, again, haven’t we seen this silhouette from her a few times already? The fur piece was the most '20s-inspired element of her design but it lacked impact.

Ivy: I loved the unexpected use of leather in this dress and how ambitious Ivy was to create the chevron design with such challenging fabric. For me, the hem was too long though. A shorter dress would have been more youthful.

Anthony Ryan: A simple yet dramatic look. I thought this was a very modern interpretation of the '20s. This design struck the right balance between flirty and in-control. His girl was conservative but still sexy.

The Judges’ Decisions

Anthony Ryan danced his way to another win while Laura Kathleen was kicked out of the club.

Did the judges get it right this week? Sound off and speak your mind in the comments below!

Denver fashion designer Mondo Guerra earned a runner-up finish on Project Runway season eight then went on to claim victory on the debut season of Project Runway All Stars. In addition to an upcoming guest editor position at Marie Claire, Mondo has also launched I Design, a new HIV/AIDS education campaign with Merck. To learn more about Mondo, visit mondoguerra.com.

NRA Blames Videogames, Movies, Media for Gun Violence

Wayne LaPierre NRA Presser - H 2012

A week after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that took the lives of 20 children and six faculty, the NRA held its highly anticipated press conference to address the mass violence that has struck the nation this year.

Executive vice president Wayne LaPierre began by expressing his sympathy for the victims of the shooting but quickly shifted to a series of accusations against the media, Hollywood and video game industry, blaming each for contributing to a violent society.

LaPierre cited media (and their corporate owners) that glorifies killers, movies that emphasize violence, and video games that allow players to simulate mass murder. He called for the employment of armed guards at each school, saying it was a matter of having "good guys" in place to stop "bad guys."

"I mean we have blood-soaked films out there, like American Psycho, Natural Born Killers," LaPierre said. "They’re aired like propaganda loops on Splatterdays and every single day.

"Thousands of music videos, and you all know this, portray life as a joke and they play murder -- portray murder as a way of life," he continued. "And then they all have the nerve to call it entertainment. But is that what it really is? Isn’t fantasizing about killing people as a way to get your kicks really the filthiest form of pornography?"

The press conference was interrupted multiple times by protestors from the anti-war group Code Pink; two members ran in front of LaPierre and held up signs and called the NRA children killers.

In blaming the media, he said that news organizations spread false information about guns.

"Rather than face -- rather than face their own moral failings the media demonize lawful gun owners, amplify their cries for more laws, and fill the national media with misinformation and dishonest thinking that only delay meaningful action, and all but guarantee that the next atrocity is only a news cycle away."

The media reaction -- LaPierre refused to take questions -- flew on Twitter, nearly all of it incredulous and mocking.

"NRA's Lapierre blames media, mentally ill, video games, Hollywood and media again. This absolutist script is tired," Mediaite founder and former MSNBC host Dan Abrams wrote. Current MSNBC host Chris Hayes tweeted, "Useful reminder: The first person Adam Lanza murdered owned a bunch of guns."

Michael Moore called it the "most deranged, delusional 'press conference' I've ever seen."

MTV's 'Washington Heights' Preview Features Young People Struggling to Make it (Video)

Washington Heights Cast - H 2012

One day after MTV said goodbye to Jersey Shore, the network has released a preview of the new unscripted series, Washington Heights.

Washington Heights follows nine best friends from the New York CIty neighborhood as they navigate the obstacles in their way of individual pursuits.

The two-minute trailer shows the cast struggling to break through, with situations like how they'll make rent, being "super broke," trying to make it big (as one of the twentysomethings says so eloquently when they arrive at where they're supposed to perform, at what looks to be a dingy "taco spot") and attempting to get hired. Many of them have dreams of being fashion designers, models , singers and the like.

The motto of the show seems to be this, as a hiring manager tells one of the nine friends: "Hustle beats talent."

Cheryl Horner Sirulnick, George McTeague and Patrick Reardon are executive producers, with Chris Linn, Shannon Fitzgerald, Christy Spitzer, Beck Hickey, Craig Sloane and Jim Czarnecki.

Washington Heights, produced by Gigantic! Productions, launches with back-to-back episodes 10 p.m. Jan. 9 on MTV.

'Killing Our Children': Sign-Wielding Protester Interrupts NRA News Conference (Video)

Wayne LaPierre Code Pink Protester - H 2012

NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre's controversial remarks about gun violence at a Friday morning press conference held in the nation's capital were upstaged by a man holding up a red fabric sign, on which it was painted in white letters, "NRA killing our kids."

All cameras in the room quickly turned to capture the protester, who stood before LaPierre for a full thirty seconds before a security guard snatched the sign away and carried him towards the exit

"NRA stop killing our children," he shouted as he was escorted away. "It's the NRA and assault weapons that are killing our children. Not armed teachers. We've got to end the violence. We've got to stop the killing -- stop the killing in our schools, stop the killing in our malls, stop the killing in our streets. The NRA are killing our children. We've got to stop the violence and violence begins with the NRA. I'm stating the true facts -- that they are the perpetrators of the crimes that take place in our schools and in our streets!"

The protester -- one of two to interrupt the event -- was from Code Pink, a women-initiated, anti-violence movement working toward ending U.S.-funded wars and occupations.

Prosecutors Ask For Jail Term For Italy's Berlusconi in Wiretap Case

Silvio Berlusconi

ROME – Prosecutors have called for Italian billionaire media tycoon and three-time prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to be given at least one year behind bars in connection with a controversial case in which he is charged with publishing information about a political rival that was obtained illegally.

Berlusconi’s allies accuse prosecutors of trying to have an impact on the outcome of elections set to take place in February. Berlusconi, who stepped down as prime minister 13 months ago amid personal and legal scandal and fears Italy could fall victim to the European debt crisis, has announced he would stand as a candidate for a fourth term as prime minister in the next elections.

The 76-year-old founder and controlling shareholder of the Mediaset television and cinema giant was also in headlines this week after he announced his engagement to Francesca Pascale, a 27-year-old Neapolitan showgirl. No date for the wedding as been set since Berlusconi is not yet officially divorced from Veronica Lario, his second wife who walked out on him in 2008.

In the latest court case, Il Giornale, the Milan newspaper Berlusconi started that is run by his brother Paolo Berlusconi, in 2005 illegally obtained wiretapped conversations with politician Piero Fassino, one of Berlusconi’s most vocal critics at the time. The conversations were illegally published in the newspaper.

On Friday, Fassino, who is now mayor or Turin and a strong advocate for the Turin Film Festival, said he would sue Berlusconi for €1 million ($1.3 million) for “enormous moral, political, and existential damages.”

Prosecutors in the case have requested one year in jail for Berlusconi, as well as a three-year sentence for Paolo Berlusconi.

It is not the first time Silvio Berlusconi faced possible jail time in recent months: in October, he was sentenced to four years behind bars for tax evasion in connection with film rights with Mediaset, the company that owns the Medusa film production and distribution company, three national television networks in Italy and one in Spain, a big ad buyer, and several print media including Il Giornale. Berlusconi is appealing the ruling, for which the statute of limitations will expire next year.

Berlusconi also remains on trial for abuse of power and for paying Karima el-Mahroug, who was 17 at the time, for sex. El-Mahroug is best known by her stage name, Ruby the Heart Stealer.

Berlusconi claims his innocence in all of the cases, which he says are politically motivated attacks from opposition figures.

Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michelle Williams Join All-Star Effort to Combat Gun Violence (Video)

Hollywood actors and entertainers have joined forces for Demand a Plan -- a grassroots effort to curb gun violence in the wake of the senseless Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.

The effort is spearheaded by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns campaign, launched last July after the Aurora, Co., movie theater shootings. Since then, a petition demanding gun reforms has gathered over 700,000 signatures.

Among the stars in the 90-second PSA: Beyonce, Jamie Foxx, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michelle Williams, Jon Hamm and Conan O'Brien.

"How many more?" they ask in the stark, black-and-white video. "How many more colleges? How many more classrooms? How many more movie theaters? How many more houses of faith?"

Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Paul RuddWill Ferrell, Sarah Silverman, Ellen DeGeneres, Julianne Moore and Chris Rock are also among the dozens of stars asking viewers to "demand a plan" for gun law reforms.

According to demandaplan.org, the movement seeks to pass gun laws that require background checks for every gun sold in America, ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and make gun trafficking a federal crime.

The video is released on the same morning that NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre blamed gun violence on Hollywood and recommended that armed guards be stationed in every school in the country.

'The Lying Game' Boss Reveals Big Death in Season 2

The Lying Game Exclusive Image - H 2012

[Warning: Spoilers ahead for upcoming second season.]

No one is safe on The Lying Game.

The first season might have wrapped up with Rebecca (Charisma Carpenter) confirmed as Sutton and Emma's (Alexandra Chando) biological mother -- plus, her scheming with the former -- but when the ABC Family teen soap returns in January, not everyone will survive the 10-episode run, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Yup, that's right: Someone is going to bite the dust.

STORY: ABC Family's 'Pretty Little Liars,' 'Lying Game' Return Dates Revealed

"Expect a lot of twists, turns and melodrama -- and maybe even somebody else dies," executive producer Chuck Pratt Jr. told THR. "The stakes continue to be life and death."

The death of a core Lying Game character won't take place until near the end of the season, giving viewers plenty of time to invest in the shenanigans and new characters that will be dropping by in the new year. With a new guy, Jordan (Ryan Rottman), coming into town, will he be the unlucky one? Will the series take a page out of Sara Shepard's Lying Game novel and off one of the twins?

Unlike its Pretty Little Liars lead-in, the death count on Lying Game has been relatively tame considering the heightened, dangerous world the characters live in, with only a few (see: Derek) among the deceased.

PHOTOS: Broadcast TV's Returning Shows for 2012-13

Here's a little tease from Pratt -- who likened the long wait between seasons to "a good wine" -- to tide you over for about the next 10 episodes: "We have felt that in the second season we’re about to go to all the places that we really wanted to go -- in some cases, places we never thought we would be able to go or ever have the opportunity. It’s been a special 10 episodes."

Who do you think will take their final bow this season?

The Lying Game premieres season two at 9 p.m. Jan. 8 on ABC Family.

Ben Affleck Addresses Senate Run Rumors: 'I Got a Lot on My Plate' (Video)

Ben Affleck Face the Nation - H 2012

During an interview with Face the Nation’s Bob Schieffer slated to air Sunday, Ben Affleck addressed speculation that he will seek a U.S. Senate seat.

The Argo director played coy when asked by the CBS host if he would seek the Massachusetts seat currently held by John Kerry, a position that could become vacant should Kerry be nominated for U.S. Secretary of State, as many political observers expect he will be.

PHOTOS: 20 Biggest Political Players in Hollywood

"Massachusetts currently has two extraordinary senators,” Affleck said. “There is no vacancy.”

Affleck’s political profile has risen of late thanks to his latest film, Argo, as well as his work as the founder of the Eastern Congo Initiative. The actor-director was in Washington, DC, this week to testify before the House Armed Services Committee on the bloody conflict in the war-torn country.

Pressed further about his potential political ambitions, Affleck said he had a “great fondness and admiration for the political process,” but that he would not “get into speculation” about what his political future might hold.

“I’m really happy being involved from the outside in government, advocating for the Congolese,” Affleck said.

He added that Argo had sparked dialogue about America’s relationship with Iran.

“As Hillary Clinton said, [Iran is] the most pressing foreign policy issue today. So, I got a lot on my plate.”

Face the Nation airs Sunday on CBS at 10:30 a.m.

Documentary Producer Claims Spike TV Stole Film Footage for 'I Am Bruce Lee'

Did one fight film appropriate scenes from another?

Chris Tavlarides, the producer of a TV documentary entitled The Good Son: The Life of Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini has filed an unusual lawsuit against Spike Cable Networks over its film, I Am Bruce Lee.

According to a complaint filed this week in California federal court, he made a deal in 2010 with Network Entertainment Inc. to film a documentary based on a book by Mark Kriegel about the career of a boxing legend. The following summer, after the conclusion of principal photography, nearly all of the film's production personnel was pulled off of The Good Son and moved over to another Network production, I Am Bruce Lee.

The two films not only shared the same director, line producer and post-production houses, but allegedly some of the same on-camera talent including Mickey Rourke, Ed O'Neil and Ray Mancini.

"Two very different subjects (Mancini v. Lee), two ostensibly different films, yet one suspiciously universal source for many of the two films' principal elements," says the lawsuit.

Tavlarides says he saw I Am Bruce Lee on Spike in February, 2012, after being referred by a friend who told him it had the exact same feel, tone, scenes and actors.

The plaintiff says he realized that the "exact film footage" he owned from The Good Son "somehow appeared in I Am Bruce Lee, to wit, a sequence where Ray Mancini is hitting the 'heavy bag' in a boxer's training gym in Santa Monica, California.

He says he never granted permission and believes that Network "diverted" funds from his film to help complete I Am Bruce Lee for Spike.

Tavlarides, represented by attorney David Berke, is suing for copyright infringement and asking that Spike be enjoined from re-broadcasting I Am Bruce Lee and hand over all gains, profits and advantages from its acts of alleged infringement.

Viacom, the parent of Spike TV, hasn't yet responded to a request for comment.

Showtime Orders 'Vatican' Drama Pilot, Ridley Scott to Direct

FILM: Ridley Scott

Showtime has ordered its first pilot for series consideration in 2013.

The Vatican, a contemporary thriller about spirituality, power and politics, is set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church. The series would explore the relationships and rivalries, in addition to the mysteries and miracles behind the institution.

Paul Attanasio (House, Donnie Brasco) wrote the one-hour script, with Ridley Scott (Prometheus, The Good Wife) set to direct his first television pilot.

Production on The Vatican, produced by Sony TV, begins next year. Attanasio, Scott and David Zucker (The Good Wife) will executive produce.

This comes as Showtime recently wrapped the seasons of Homeland and Dexter, and readies several new scripted dramas for 2013: Liev Schreiber's Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex with Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan.

'X Factor' Finale Recap: Who Won the $5 Million Prize?

x factor 5th harmony carly rose tate stevens L

In case you couldn't tell by the glittering trees adorning the stage on Wednesday, it's Christmastime at The X Factor.

This was made abundantly clear during Thursday's elimination episode when, dressed in hues of red, white and black, the final three contestants delivered Christmas classics to the crowd. (Hostess Khloe Kardashian looked gorgeous in a green lace, long-sleeved mini with a metallic gold belt.)

PHOTOS: 'X Factor' Season 2: Meet the Contestants

But first, it wouldn't be a Simon Cowell production without an over-the-top, self-indulgent introduction. Tonight, that came in the form of a staged red carpet, in which all three judges and performers Pitbull and One Direction arrived via black SUVs (for Cowell, a Rolls Royce, Kardashian noted). After an awkward technical glitch involving host Mario Lopez, finalists Tate Stevens, Carly Rose Sonenclar and Fifth Harmony then made their grand entrance, singing the Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" on the red carpet as they made their way past all the former contestants (clad entirely in white) whom they beat on the way to the finals.

The highlight of that segment? Kardashian told Cowell, "I love your chest hair" when he showed up in his signature unbuttoned button-down.

It was a night of nostalgia, as producers packaged several video segments that highlighted some of the season's most memorable moments. In addition to a look at the season as a whole -- including a feel-good segment showcasing all the audition "yeses" and a feel-bad segment showing criticism, tears and hugs -- each judge was honored with a montage. For L.A. Reid, it was his over-the-top hand gestures set to a track from The Nutcracker; for Britney Spears, an all-too-short look at her memorable faces, including the infamous "scared Britney"; for Simon, his best zingers (including, "You sounded like a dog trying to lay an egg") set to "The Grinch"; and for Demi Lovato, it was, of course, her sassiest spats with Cowell.

A few of the "most memorable contestants," as Kardashian said, earned their screen time, with the hostess taking time during the broadcast to ask Vino Alan, Diamond White and Emblem3 how they were feeling. While Alan and White were obviously pulling for their respective teammates, Drew Chadwick of Emblem3 threw out the suggestion that all the contestants "throw down" money to rent a cabin in Whistler and go snowboarding. For what it's worth, CeCe Frey seemed into it.

Bringing a little star-power to the festivities were Pitbull and One Direction, who performed atop a weirdly large set made of red lips. Why?

Fifth Harmony was the first to be eliminated. And after last night, while we were all excited to see if they could do the impossible, was anyone really that surprised? Tate and Carly have been the frontrunners all along, and the finale proved no different. For their last performance together, Sonenclar and Stevens performed Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" -- a solid middle ground for a country crooner and a teen diva.

One commercial break later, the winner was announced. So who took home the $5 million recording contract with Syco/Epic Records? Why, it was Tate Stevens.

"First and foremost, I gotta thank the man upstairs for taking care of me," said Stevens. "My family, all the country music fans, God bless you and thank you so very much for all the votes, and this is the best day of my life."

Moments later, Spears could be seen whispering in Sonenclar's ear before the teen-superstar-in-the-making walked over to give Stevens and Reid both big hugs. She got her own recognition from Lopez, as well, who noted that she has a big career ahead of her.

As the news was undoubtedly sinking in, Stevens was immediately handed a microphone and began singing Justin Moore's "Like There's No Tomorrow." He still looked shocked as Camilla from Fifth Harmony snuck up behind him for another big hug. We have no doubt that there were plenty more of those to go around after the cameras cut.

So what do you think of America's choice? Did Tate Stevens deserve the $5 million dollars? And while we're on the subject, is the country singer a good fit for the pop-heavy label?

The L.A. Complex Cast - P 2012

TORONTO – This should drain the swimming pool: The CW has decided against ordering a third season of The L.A. Complex.

A network spokesperson on Thursday said the U.S. network is parting ways with the steamy soap about Canadians chasing the Hollywood dream in Los Angeles.

The decision follows indie producer Epitome Pictures scrambling in recent weeks to keep The L.A. Complex alive after Canada’s MuchMusic channel decided not to order a third season.

Losing its key North American distributors could well spell the end of the Canadian series, which was created and executive produced by Martin Gero.

Gero wrote for HBO’s Bored to Death before returning to Canada to write the homegrown drama tailored for the U.S. market.

The series was sold to 170 territories outside Canada.

The ensemble cast included Jonathan Patrick Moore and Cassie Steele (Degrassi).

The L.A. Complex was executive produced by Stephen Sohn and Linda Schuyler of Epitome Pictures.

NHL Scraps Games Through Jan. 14 as Lockout Continues

LA Kings NHL Playoffs - H 2012

TORONTO – Calling off the entire NHL season may not be far off.

The league Thursday moved to cancel slightly more than half of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule, as it axed all games through Jan. 14.

That represents 625 regular-season games, or 50.8 percent of the season scrapped, as the league and the NHL Players Association continue talks on a new labor deal without success.

ANALYSIS: How the NHL's Lockout Hurts NBC

Team owners and their locked-out players haven't negotiated on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement since last week, with no new dates planned ahead of Christmas.

Worse for North American broadcasters like NBC Sports and the CBC in Canada, the NHL may be one step away from canceling the entire season if it runs out of games after mid-January to fill arenas.

The NHL scrapped the entire season absent a new labor deal in 2004-05.

CW Developing Robin Hood Drama

Robin Hood Dan Jinks - P 20121938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood" and Dan Jinks (inset)

The CW is in the market for Robin Hood.

The youth-skewing network is developing Sherwood, an hourlong period drama with a female slant, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

STORY: CW Developing 'Wonder Woman' Origin Story

Sherwood, which has received a script commitment at the network, is set in 1072 England and revolves around a young noblewoman who sets out to free her serf boyfriend, who has been wrongfully imprisoned by ruthless Norman occupiers. Seeing help from the vanished Robin of Locksley, she inadvertently reunites -- and joins -- the fabled Robin Hood and his Merry Men, inspiring new hope for the oppressed people of Nottingham.

Tze Chun (Cashmere Mafia) will pen the script, which hails from CBS Television Studios. Oscar-winning American Beauty producer Dan Jinks, who produced the CW's short-lived Emily Owens, M.D., will executive produce.

The project comes at a time when the network has found success with freshman drama Arrow, a reboot of the DC Comics franchise about the superhero archer. Sherwood's Robin Hood, should the drama move forward, would become the network's second archer.

More TV Development News

Sherwood becomes the latest high-profile hero to surface at the network this development cycle, joining Amazon, a Wonder Woman origin story from Grey's Anatomy's Allan Heinberg. CW also has a contemporary Alice in Wonderland drama from The Playboy Club's Chad Hodge set up this development season, as well as a Sleepy Hollow reboot.

The Chun effort joins NBC's Hood, marking the second Robin Hood story set up this year. The NBC effort, which also received a script commitment, hails from Ken Sanzel (Blue Bloods) and re-imagines Robin Hood as an Iraq War veteran-turned-outlaw in upstate New York.

Chun is repped by WME, Gramercy Park Entertainment and Morris Yorn; Jinks is repped by WME and Bloom Hergott.

The Robin Hood story has been a frequent subject of film and TV adaptations, most recently with Ridley Scott taking on the tale in 2010 with Russell Crowe as the archer/swordsman. Errol Flynn famously starred in 1938's The Adventures of Robin Hood (pictured above), which many consider to be the benchmark in the franchise.
